Lens implantation

CLE – ICL – Lens Implantation

Area of Application:
Lens implantation is a complete replacement of the lens. This treatment is used when other methods are not suitable. This is generally the case with a cataract, but also, for example, if your vision is too strongly pronounced. Or when the lens loses its elasticity and therefore results in presbyopia. Your suitability for a lens implant is determined on location.

Techniques and Function:
Clear Lens Extraction (CLE)
With this variation, the focus of the lens is changed, which is realized by completely removing your natural lens and replacing it with an intraocular lens (IOL). The method used here is called CLE. This method is particularly suitable if you are over 40 years old. The reason for this is usually associated with presbyopia. In this case, flexible lenses are used, which also compensate for these refractive errors. The optimal lens for you or if you are suitable for this method will be determined on location during the preliminary examination.

Implantable Collamer Lenses (ICL)

Older people have vision problems that cannot be corrected with laser treatment due to high dioptric values or any diseases such as excessive astigmatism or suffering from myopia. For these people, we offer the ICL lenses of the brand Staar. The patients who receive such lenses are generally between 21 and 45 years old.

Unlike intraocular lenses (which completely replace your lens), these lenses are inserted through a tiny incision between the iris and the body’s own lens, in addition to your own lens. With the natural lens, the ICL ensures that the light is bundled correctly on the retina and that the patient can see sharply again, even without glasses.

ICL Lenses Advantages:

  • Lenses can be easily replaced. This means that you can switch to a multi or trifocal lens at some point if you have problems with presbyopia. ICL lenses are not suitable for people with age-related vision problems.
  • ICL lenses can also be used for young people.
  • Painless and not noticeable after the procedure.

ICL lenses risks/disadvantages:

  • Swelling possible
  • Increased intraocular pressure possible
  • Turbidity of own lens possible
  • If nearsightedness/presbyopia problems occur, the ICL lens should be replaced with a refractive lens replacement with IOL lenses. The costs vary depending on the type of lens, which can only be determined after a detailed preliminary examination. We will be happy to provide you with an uncomplicated cost calculation on site. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis.

Lens implantation Frequently Asked Questions

An intraocular lens (ICL) is a lens implant placed in the posterior chamber of the eye in a procedure lasting approximately 10 minutes. It is custom-made to correct myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism. The artificial lens is neither perceptible nor visible.

The eyes are treated with anesthetic drops. For 3 to 5 hours after the operation, patients must be prepared for a foreign body sensation, which includes light sensitivity and tears in the eyes. Painkillers are not required.

The ICL lens is made of a biocompatible material. It is very flexible and cannot be felt.

The artificial lens contains a UV protector that protects the lens and retina from sensitive solar radiation.

Precise vision corrections are performed using the latest methods. The newest technology is used both in the preliminary examination and during the operation as our surgical microscopes and the eye laser equipment are from Carl Zeiss. Laser treatment is performed with a femtosecond laser of the latest generation. You can expect the safest operations.

Including all preparations, the treatment takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Laser application and surgical treatment of the eye usually only takes a few minutes.

Correction with laser eye surgery or ICL does not influence later cataract surgery. There are calculation formulas for laser eye surgery patients with which cataract surgery can be performed even years after laser eye surgery. A later insertion of multifocal lenses to correct presbyopia is also an option.

The patient should be at least 19 years old for all procedures. Dioptre values must be stable for at least 1-2 years. Wound healing disorders must be clarified in advance. Relevant eye diseases are somewhat counterproductive for refractive surgery.
